Dmitry Alexeyevich, a translator, receives an assignment from an anonymous client to translate into Russian some chronicles written by Spanish conquerors in the 16th century on the Yucatan Peninsula. Dmitry initially thinks it's just routine work, but as he reads, his interest is piqued. The text tells the story of the expeditionary journey through ancient Mayan temples, the attacks by the local inhabitants, human sacrifices, and rumors of a dark curse. With each chapter he translates, he takes another step towards unraveling the mystery hidden within the text and also another step towards madness.
Strange things begin to happen in Moscow. Suddenly, the events described in the text become a part of reality: he hears the call of a jaguar, finds scratches behind the door, and the people in his inner circle begin to be violently murdered. Natural disasters, tsunamis, and earthquakes seem to announce the apocalypse and confirm the prophecy. Has the translator lost his mind? Or perhaps, the conquerors' narrative is heralding the end of the world? A dramatic race against time begins...
